Control Panel

FAQ

What kind of control panel is installed on the servers?

We use the Plesk 8.6 control panel.

How do I access the control panel for a domain?

Go to https://www.mysite.com:8443 and enter your control panel username and password.

Since control panel access is SSL encrypted, you'll need to make sure that you use https:// instead of http:// at the beginning of the control panel URL.

I get a security alert when trying to view the control panel.

This error you are getting is do to the fact that the security certificate is invalid or expired. All you have to do is click continue, to proceed to the control panel.

This certificate is only used to encrypt the data between you and the server. It serves no other purpose. Because you're not entering secure data like credit card numbers or personal information it doesn't require a valid certificate.

What can be configured using the Plesk control panel?

Is there a live demo of the Plesk control panel?

Yes, you can access the live, online demo.

Some of the features in the Plesk demo may not be enabled for your account or even a service that we offer (e.g. anonymous FTP, FrontPage).

How do I change the contact name or username associated with a control panel account?

Please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it letting us know what contact name and/or username you want to use and we will change it for you.

When trying to access the control panel, the browser responds that it cannot find the page or it gives me an error message. How do I troubleshoot this?

  1. Make sure that you are using the correct URL for your control panel and that you are using a vaild username and password. Here's more info on how to access and log into your control panel.
  2. If you are behind a firewall or using a proxy, it may be preventing you from accessing the control panel which is located on the server's port 8443. The control panel is assigned to port 8443 for security purposes since many of the control panel functions must be executed as "root". If you wish to use your control from behind the firewall or proxy, you'll need to enable access to port 8443.
  3. Make sure your browser is enabled for SSL connections and that you are trying to access the control panel via https://, instead of http://.
  4. Make sure that JavaScript is enabled for your browser. The control panel uses a combination of JavaScript and PHP, so if your browser is having problems with JavaScript, that may be the problem.
  5. If you are using a Mac, there is a bug in Internet Explorer which causes it to have problems with the latest version of SSL, which is what is used by Plesk, our control panel. Microsoft is no longer developing IE for the Mac, so it looks like this is not something that they are going to fix. The solution is to use another browser to access the control panel. All other browsers on OS X should work, including Safari, Firefox, Opera and iCab. If you are using OS 9, try downloading iCab.

What is a domain administrator and how can one be created for a domain?

Unlike the main control panel username, which has control panel access to all of your domains, a domain administrator has control panel access to a single domain only. Domain administrators are useful when you want to let someone else maintain one of your domains.

Domain administrator can be created using your control panel.

  1. Log in to your control panel.
  2. Select the domain name.
  3. Select "Domain Administrator".
  4. Check the box next to "Allow domain administrator access".
  5. Enter the a password and confirm the password, then select "OK".

How do I change the password for a domain user?

  3. Click on "Domain User".

What are the requirements for user passwords and what can be done to make them difficult to crack?

Passwords should be 8-14 characters in length. The most secure type of password includes a combination of upper and lower case letters, along with numbers and symbols. For instance, H*y7sk!w would be a very difficult password to crack.

Try to avoid using common words in English or other languages, as well as obvious things like your name, a relative's name or other words that might easily be guessed by an unauthorised user. Here are examples of bad passwords:

  • any person's name including yourself, partner, children, relatives, friends, etc.
  • your birthday
  • your telephone number, address, etc.
  • words or combinations of words from a dictionary, English or any other language
  • numeric sequences, e.g. "1234"
  • words spelled backwards

Finally, never under any circumstance make the password the same as your username or use a password, e.g. "username", "password", "admin", "test", "guest".

How do I have the control panel password resent or reset?

If you know your control panel username and the email address that is associated with your control panel account, then you can use the form on the control panel login screen to have your password emailed to you. Just select "Forgot your password?".

If you do not remember your control panel username or the email address that is associated with your control panel account, please contact us and we will let you know what they are.

As a security measure, we will only send the new password to the primary email address supplied when you subscribed. If you need to change the email address associated with your control panel account, you can do that using your control panel.

Once your control panel password is reset, you'll be able to log in and change the password for your control panel username, FTP username, email accounts, web users or domain users.

Where can I find help using the Plesk control panel?

Each page of the control panel has its own Help section, just select "Help" from the left-side menu. Also, when you roll-over an item in the control panel with your mouse, a short description shows up under the Help section.

Plesk has online documentation for many of these features as well.

Is there any documentation on the Plesk control panel?

The Plesk 8.6 Client's Manual is available online. Additional documentation is also available online.

Some of the features covered in the Plesk documentation may not be enabled for your account, or may not be a feature that we offer (e.g. anonymous FTP, FrontPage).

How do I password protect a folder?

Please see Plesk's documentation on Managing Protected Directories.

What is a web user and how do you create one?

A web user is an account that has it's own webspace that is separate from the main site. It can be accessed via http://www.mydomain.com/~user (replace "mydomain.com/" with your actual domain and "user" with the actual web user name).

Web users can be created, edited and deleted using your control panel. For more information please see Plesk's documentation on Managing Web Users.

Web users need to be all lower-case.
